Kota Kinabalu, 4 April 2016 – Sabah Fest 2016 will kick start the Ka’amatan (Harvest Festival) month of May with another spectacular stage performance – Gulu Gulu – A Tribute to the Past – which takes place from April 29th to May 1st at the National Department For Culture And Arts, Sabah (JKKN Sabah) Auditorium.

Gulu Gulu is a Kadazandusun word which means ‘a long time ago’. This year’s original musical production highlights the adventures, trials and tribulations of the legendary Sabah warrior, Mat Salleh during the colonial era. The story is set between 1894 (Sandakan) until his year of death in Tambunan in 1900.

After thorough historical research and detailed analysis, his story is interpreted through dance, song and music, bringing the audience on an expedition across Sabah to showcase places and timelines of historical siginificance during Mat Salleh’s daring exploits of resistance against the British North Borneo Chartered Company rule. The Among this year’s featured ethnic groups on stage include the Kadazan Penampang (Sumazau), the show starts at 8:00pm.

This is the best opportunity to see Sabah’s craftspeople at work and purchase authentic handicraft, whilst sampling the best of Sabah’s flavours – all under one roof. Prior to the show, visitors can enjoy a variety of traditional dance pocket shows at the mini amphitheatre performed by the cultural dancers of JKKN.
