Sabah Fest 2012 highlights traditional Sabah food and handicraft

Kota Kinabalu, 17 April 2012 – As the highly-anticipated Sabah Fest takes centre stage from 3rd to 5th May with ‘The Adventures of Ngarayang’ at the newly-launched Auditorium JKKN Sabah, a string of fringe events will be taking place outside the venue to give visitors a complete cultural journey.

Handicraft-making demonstrations by expert local artisans, pocket shows of traditional music and dance performances and traditional foods to sample will all be a part of this cultural extravaganza as various booths showcasing all of these and more are opened to the public from 10.00am to 10.00pm during these three days.

Craft makers from all over the state will be there demonstrating the production of handicrafts such as traditional tapestries by Sirungan binti Sulaiman from Kota Belud, bamboo musical instruments by George Nuli form Kota Belud and Philipus Jani from Tambunan, miniature lepa-lepa by Haji Alpaka Hamah from Semporna and bead accessories by Nonjiring Montoku from Kudat.

Established art and handicraft institutions including Sabah Art Gallery, Kraftangan Malaysia, Kadaiku, Mayuri House of Art & Learning, RF Collections of Sabah Pearls, and Olumis Batik showcasing Sabah batik, will also be opening up exhibition booths to showcase their products.

Foodies will be in for a real treat as food and beverage entrepreneurs will also be at the event to highlight some of Sabah’s best traditional food and signature dishes.  Be prepared to sample a range of local products from chocolate to ice cream, honey, tea and coffee. The Bajau, Kadazandusun and Brunei Sabah cultural associations will highlight their traditional signature delicacies with exciting flavours and aromas to excite the palate. Kudat-born Malaysian celebrity chef, Chef Johan will also be there to exhibit some of his culinary specials. Visitors will not want to miss sampling these and a cultural experience of a lifetime, all at Sabah Fest 2012.
